The NSW EPA has confirmed the 2026–27 waste levy rates, with increases taking effect from 1 July 2026. While the increase is linked to CPI and may appear modest, it can have a significant impact on project costs where large volumes of waste are generated and disposed of.Key changes include:

  • Metropolitan Levy Area (MLA): $174.20/t → $180.20/t (+$6.00/t)
  • Regional Levy Area (RLA): $100.30/t → $103.80/t (+$3.50/t)

For project managers, contractors and developers, now is the time to review:

  • Project budgets and cost forecasts
  • Demolition and excavation allowances
  • Waste management plans
  • Contractor and subcontractor pricing assumptions
  • Capital works and infrastructure project estimates

On larger projects, even a small increase per tonne can translate into substantial additional disposal costs. Projects that span the 2025–26 and 2026–27 financial years should ensure the updated levy rates have been captured in remaining forecast costs and procurement budgets.

The waste levy remains an important mechanism for encouraging resource recovery and reducing landfill disposal across NSW, but it also serves as a reminder that waste management costs continue to trend upward and should not be overlooked during project planning.

Have you reviewed your project budgets for the new waste levy rates yet?
