Fire Resistance Level

Fire Resistance Level (FRL) is a measure used under the National Construction Code (NCC) to describe the ability of a building element to withstand fire for a specified period. An FRL is expressed as three numbers representing structural adequacy, integrity, and insulation, measured in minutes.

Key Components

  • Structural Adequacy: The ability of a building element to maintain its load-bearing capacity during a fire.
  • Integrity: The ability of the element to resist the passage of flames and hot gases from one side to the other.
  • Insulation: The ability to limit the temperature rise on the side of the building element not exposed to fire.
  • FRL Ratings: Expressed as three numbers, such as 120/120/120, representing the required performance in minutes for structural adequacy, integrity, and insulation respectively.

FRLs are a critical component of fire-safe building design, helping to contain fire and smoke, protect occupants, maintain structural stability, and provide sufficient time for evacuation and emergency response.
