Contaminated Land
Remediation

The peak industry body representing the remediation industry, CRC Care (Cooperative Research Centre for Contamination Assessment and Remediation of the Environment) estimates there are 160,000 sites with contamination issues located across Australia, and that approximately 1,000 of these sites are investigated each year.

Faced with a trend toward more protective regulatory standards for a growing list of contaminants and greater stakeholder focus on sustainability, organisations need to be able to quickly and effectively identify and address risk. Land and water have been contaminated through past activities, and the remediation of such land and water bodies is important for a healthy society, as well as reducing our clients financial and legal exposure.

Remediation is the act of cleaning up and/or containing contaminants so as to minimise their impact on human health and the environment. These contaminated sites are made up of of a variety of different contaminated media  including groundwater, surface water, sediment or soil which are often hidden from view because they are buried below ground or covered over with topsoil, fill material or buildings.

Contamination may not be discovered until  the ground is disturbed by an excavation of the land for a utility installation, development works or maintenance works. Other trigger events include due diligence investigations for property transactions, the planning process, change of land use, visible pollution or seepage events.

CARAS has a unique mix of experienced cost, construction, scientific and engineering professionals who understand regulatory compliance and commercial realities of contaminated land remediation.
